ABOUT  Gayle Frazer Registered Landscape Architect in Cincinnati, Ohio

My landscape design philosophy...

I believe a landscape architect's job is to balance the practical with the aesthetic. Designing great outdoor spaces not only solves real problems, but it also should serve on a spiritual level as well. It should feed the soul with the necessary and limitless bounty that the outdoors can provide. To practice good landscape design is to create a work of art, one that breathes, grows, changes, and evolves into something of its own making - uniting function and beauty in a graceful symmetry.

My professional experience

I have provided professional landscape architecture and design services to hundreds of homeowners, including backyard and front yard design, swimming pool landscaping, and water feature layout. My services have also been utilized by professionals such as developers, architects, engineers, small municipalities, and school districts. My firm's project list varies widely in type, size, and scope of work. I have won a number of design awards for my work and have been recognized locally and statewide.

The foundation of my professionalism is grounded in the personal touch. Many projects have achieved success only through conscientious team efforts. I believe the landscape designer's objective is to first listen to client's needs and concerns, then to observe and study the client's outdoor space and allow it to reveal its own story. Only then can a designer approach the problem with grounded solutions specific to site and client.

A successful job is considered one that not only pleases the client, but also successfully integrates with it's surroundings and has long-term viability. This means that plants are carefully selected and appropriately placed for optimum health. An outdoor living space should be a stress free environment with visual continuity and pleasing variety. All surfaces carefully detailed, and a visual continuity that creates the perfect balance of practical and aesthetic.

I work from the perspective of a team player. The success of any landscape design, regardless of size or complexity, requires consensus among all stake holders. Whether the project is public or private, everyone from administration to maintenance, husbands and wives to children, must all buy into the solution.

My design process

Most landscape design that homeowners request can be done in the field. This type of design requires a great deal of experience in order to save time and money, as well as exceed the client's expectations. Not many designers are able or willing to "think on their feet". I have completed hundreds of such designs for homeowners and DIY landscapers. Here is what you can expect during our initial consultation.

THE Landscape Design  PROCESS

During my initial consultation, here is what will happen:

  1. We will schedule an appointment (1 to 2 hours) that works for you.
  2. Meet and briefly discuss goals, preferences, likes, dislikes, timeline, maintenance, and budget.
  3. I will offer ideas and consultation throughout this interview.
  4. We will continue to discuss I measure the project area.
  5. I will design the proper outdoor living space to meet your needs. You may watch and participate in this process if you'd like!

The take away:

  1. A "to scale" plan for your project, from which you can solicit competitive bids from reputable contractors. I will assist in selecting if you wish (research some of the contractors I work with on my partners page).
  2. A good concept plan for constructed elements (not construction documents). This can be used to meet manufacturer's specifications when needed.
  3. An excellent value for your dollars spent.
  4. Confidence that your landscape project is in good hands.
